Visalia Mighty Oak Chorus

Ken McNutt

The Mighty Oak Chorus of the Barbershop Harmony Society recognizes Ken McNutt our Chapter President. Ken sings lead in the chorus as well as “Some Assembly Required”.  He said he sang tenor once in contest.

Ken has been a barbershop member since 1983, when he was just 17 years old. He attended Redwood High School, where he sang in the choir under the direction of Don Campbell. This experience introduced him to the genre of barbershop singing, which attracted him with its tight harmonies. At that time, Don Campbell was also directing the Kingsman Chorus in Hanford, and Ken would travel to Hanford with a group of men from Visalia, including Bud Case and Ron Dial.  Dee Baughman said he brought him when he was just 16.

Ken loves quartet singing and has sung in a few quartets.  He sang with Timberliners for 15 years and presently sings with SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED with Landes Dung on tenor, Ed Grant on Baritone and Dee Baughman on Bass, for 12 years.

Ken is a Visalia man from a rather large family.  He has seven brothers and two sisters one with whom he shared a womb, yep! He has a twin sister!!  His siblings are scattered now in: Exeter, CA; Baltimore, MD; Grapevine, TX; San Bernadino, CA; King City, CA and Visalia.

As a young man out of high school Ken worked at Park Vista/Villa Del Rey/Villa as it is known today.  His Father owned the Oak Street Laundry where he worked with family, then worked 31 years at “One Hour Martinizing”.

Ken met Freda Bowman in High School, but they didn’t date until they had a same class together in college at COS.  Then in 1988 he married his lovely bride of 36 years!  He said Freda wasn’t a great fan of Barbershop but now she is, and we know her and love her.  Freda is fantastically talented and serves a vital part of the Mighty Oak Chorus as board member at large along with some other wonderful women.

It is truly an honor to present Ken (Kenny) McNutt as our member of note Music note. He is a humble and faithful member of the Mighty Oak Chorus for decades of harmony in Barbershop style.
